Short cv:

I am an undergraduate student pursuing my degree in Marine and Freshwater Sciences majoring oceanography and marine geology, with an interest in futuristic oceanographic trends. I joined two projects while onboard the SA Agulhas during SEAmester 2024 as a trainee from POGO.

The first project investigated how eddies broken off from the Agulhas Current due to retroflection drive salinity and temperature differences in the Atlantic Ocean, along with size comparison calculations between such anti-cyclonic and cyclonic eddies. These eddies were resolved using the GLORYS physical ocean model, and the Okubo-Weiss method was used to detect closed vortices in a geostrophic field.

The second project involved mapping submarine canyons on the east coast of South Africa through QGIS to identify better coelacanth habitats that could have been used for past expeditions. GEBCO data were incorporated and other bathymetric data were identified and discussed.

In future I hope to work on observational oceanography, with a focus on satellite and AI technology.
