Dr. Margaret Fafa Awushie Akwetey is a Lecturer in the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. She holds a PhD in Oceanography and Limnology from the same university, where she also earned her MPhil and BSc degrees in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. Her research areas include aquatic ecology, benthic biodiversity, ecosystem health assessment, and ecotoxicology, focusing especially on coastal and estuarine environments. She has substantial experience examining human impacts on aquatic ecosystems, including fishing activities, pollution, and climate-related stressors, mainly in West African coastal waters, seashores and wetlands.

Currently, her work integrates field ecology, biodiversity monitoring, and environmental assessment to support sustainable fisheries and wetland conservation. She has led and been part of numerous international projects funded by organisations such as the National Geographic Society, Global Development Network, PADI Foundation, and AU-IBAR. She is also dedicated to science communication, ocean literacy, and community outreach (with funding support from the British Ecological Society, the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, etc.) to foster biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness in coastal Ghana and broader West Africa. She participated in the 2025 POGO-OceanQuest-OceanX Shipboard Training Fellowship – ECOP Short Leg.
