2022 NF-POGO-IEO Shipboard Training Fellowship onboard RADIALES cruise

February 15, 2022–May 15, 2022

Cruise activities include: – Micro and mesozooplankton samples will be collected through vertical hauling with WP2 40µm net and oblique hauling with double Bongo 200µm net – Monthly, an oblique hauling will be made using a Bongo 335µm net, in order to collect icthyoplankton samples. – Hydrographic profiles (temperature, conductivity and depth) will be taken using a CTD in the sample stations and in three more stations. – An oceanographic rosette with Niskin bottles will collect biogeochemical (TA, pH, oxygen, inorganic nutrients, dissolved organic matter..) and biological samples (abundance, biomass and diversity) of planktonic organisms.   Sample processing and analysis techniques carried out in the Oceanographic center include: – Zooplanktonic diversity and biomass analysis through traditional microscopy and semiautomatic identification (Zooscan and Flowcam- Ecotaxa) – Cuantification and classification of marine planktonic microorganisms, according to their different optic and morphological properties, using flow citometry. – Marine microorganisms diversity: DNA extraction, amplification of gen 16S rRNA by PC, High-Throughput Sequencing and HTS. – Biogeochemical analysis: inorganic nutrients (Autoanalyzer AA4) and dissolved organic matter (quantity and quality)

biological oceanography

The main objective of the training is to take part on the cruises linked to RADIALES project to carry out the collection and preservation of sea water samples to study plankton communities abundance and biomass in two stations (E2CO y E4CO) in coastal area of A Coruña. The fellow will support the science crew onboard the cruise and, additionally, the fellow will be instructed in samples processing and analysis techniques carried out in the Oceanographic center
