2026 NF-POGO-IRD Shipboard Training on the PIRATA F-36 cruise

March 10, 2026–April 10, 2026

The Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) Project is a multinational (USA, Brazil and France) programme initiated in 1997. PIRATA constitutes the main observation network in the tropical Atlantic for climate prediction and research, studying air-sea interaction in the Tropical Atlantic to seasonal, interannual or longer timescale based on a network of 18 meteo-oceanographic buoys dedicated to monitor and analyse air-sea exchange along with the oceanic thermohaline structure down to 500m depth.

The trainee will participate in the main scientific activities on board such as acquisition of hydrological and currents profiles (CTD/LADCP casts during stations), thermal profiles with XBT probes, participate to SVP and ARGO deployment operations as well as sea water sampling (from bottle or TSG) for chemistry parameters analyses. The trainee will also take part in operations to recover and deploy moored meteo-oceanographic buoys and ADCP currentmeters.
